3x12 DemonsMassExorcism

A mass of demons are all simultaneously exorcised. (Jus in Bello)

Exorcism is a means of expelling spirits such as demons from their vessels and sending them back to where they came from. Demon exorcisms are commonly performed by citing Latin incantations.

ProcedureEdit

When one wishes to carry out an exorcism on a demon, it is done by containing, trapping or binding the demon (so it cannot escape before the exorcism is complete), and by reciting exorcism rites and incantations (usually Latin and Christian ones in demonic exorcisms carried out by hunters). As one says the exorcism rites and incantations, they will begin to weaken the demon cause it pain, which in turn means that exorcism can be used as a threat or means of torture when interrogating demons. Once the final rites and incantations are finished, the demon will immediately be expelled from the vessel it is possessing and will be sent back to Hell.

Abaddon uses tactile exorcism on a crossroads demon. (Devil May Care)

Forms and typesEdit

  • Common demon exorcism - This form exorcism is commonly used by hunters as a means of torturing demons and/or neutralising them by returning them to Hell. It is carried out through saying a series of Latin incantations (which seem to vary between different exorcisms). (Phantom Traveller onwards)
  • Exorcism by demons - Powerful high-level demons such as white-eyed demons and Knights of Hell are capable of removing lower demons from their vessels and sending them back to Hell. It was indicated that this was what Lilith did to Ruby when she'd taken over Ruby's vessel, (No Rest for the Wicked) and Abaddon once exorcised a crossroads demon like this with touch. (Devil May Care)
  • 4x16 AngelExorcism

Castiel is affected by Alastair's celestial-exorcism chant. (On the Head of a Pin)

Psychic exorcism - Sam Winchester, through strengthening and developing his psychic special child abilities and further fuelling and augmented them by consuming demon blood, could psychokinetically pull demons out of their vessels and lower them back into Hell. (Season 4)
  • Angel exorcism - Alastair knew a Latin chant which, when rehearsed on an angel the caster had pinned, would exorcise the angel from its vessel and send it back to Heaven. (On the Head of a Pin)
  • Astaroth's exorcism - Astaroth knew a demonic exorcism chant which was different to the one hunters used, that could similarly expel demons from their hosts and sent them back to Hell. Astaroth's exorcism was different from regular exorcism in that instead of expelling the demon at the end, it would gradually pull them demon out of its vessel over the course of the rites. (Malleus Maleficarum)

Other attributesEdit

Astaroth's alternate exorcism chant is used on Ruby. (Jus in Bello)

It is known that saying exorcism rites in reverse will namely have the opposite effect on demons to what normal exorcism rites do; while a normal exorcism will expel a demon from its vessel, when an exorcism's rites are said in reverse in the presence of a demon that is vacating its vessel, it will immediately sent the demon straight back into the vessel it was vacating.

Rituale RomanumEdit

There have been several different recitations of the Rituale Romanum's exorcism rites:

"Regna terrae, cantate Deo,

psallite Domino
qui fertis super caelum
caeli ad Orientem
Ecce dabit voci Suae
vocem virtutis,
tribuite virtutem Deo.

Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus
omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio
infernalis adversarii, omnis legio,
omnis congregatio et secta diabolica.

Ergo draco maledicte
et omnis legio diabolica adjuramus te.
cessa decipere humanas creaturas,
eisque aeternae Perditionis venenum propinare.

Vade, Satana, inventor et magister
omnis fallaciae, hostis humanae salutis.
Humiliare sub potenti manu dei,
contremisce et effuge, invocato a
nobis sancto et terribili nomine,
quem inferi tremunt.

Ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, Domine.
Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias
libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos.
Ut inimicos sanctae Ecclesiae humiliare digneris,
te rogamus, audi nos.

Ut inimicos sanctae Ecclesiae
te rogamus, audi nos.

Terribilis Deus de sanctuario suo.
Deus Israhel ipse truderit virtutem
et fortitudinem plebi Suae.
Benedictus Deus. Gloria Patri."

LoreEdit

The practice of exorcism is part of the belief system of many cultures and religions, which believe exorcism to be and use it as a means of evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person or place believed to be under possession by said entities. Depending on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcist, exorcism may be practiced and completed by causing the subject entity to swear an oath, performing an elaborate ritual, or simply by commanding it to depart in the name of a higher power such as God.
