He was with deputy Jaffe and deputy Hein on the bridge investigating the disappearance of Troy Squire when two federal marshals came to ask them questions. The two marshals left after two FBI agents passed by. Sheriff Pierce doesn't trust the two marshals. Later, after Dean's arrest, Pierce interrogates him and shows him John's diary.
